If you take a detached view at the architecture of modern Russian cities, we can assume that the main elements of the “Russian” style today are a total triumph of gray, rows of endless tiles, residential concrete eggboxes and identical multi-apartment high-risers stretching into the distance.

Initially, such a typical building, including the well-known Khrushchev-era apartment blocks, hit the mainstream in our country after the Great Patriotic War. In the conditions of post-war devastation, Soviet architects staked on the speed of the building construction, functionality and ease of assembly. So the same type of unremarkable "districts, street blocks and residential areas" of the same type grew throughout the country.

But Russia is not just depressed cityscapes! We still have cozy wooden houses in many places. These houses were built in the traditions of real Russian architecture - decorated with patterned carvings, sometimes painted in bright colors. Many buildings are more than a hundred years old.

Fretworks around windows, on the roof, porch and gates are traditional decorative components of Russian wooden houses. Each region has its own characteristic inimitative style with unique ornaments and other decorative elements.

The tradition of decorating the house dates back to pagan times, when people believed that symbolic images and patterns could banish evil spirits from the doorstep of the house.

This is why the most of the symbolic elements are located along the outline of the doors and windows, so that evil spirits cannot get into the dwelling through them. The fretworks were also carved on the joists. Initially, these were crosses and simple geometric symbols. Over time as the tools for woodworking developed, the carvings became more intricate.

We have preserved a rich heritage of our crafty ancestors. We added modern technologies. And now you have the opportunity to continue the history of Russian ornament at home. This is beauty and home comfort that have come down to us from time immemorial.
